Evelyn is a London-based jazz vocalist and songwriter. Her solo work blends the beauty and narrative of American and British folk songwriting with jazz, and focuses on the singularity of the everyday. She is influenced by the great American songwriters such as Joni Mitchell and Carole King, and distinctive British songwriters like Labi Siffre and Nick Drake. Her vocal style is shaped by these artists alongside the jazz tradition, taking inspiration from the greats – Ella Fitzgerald, Chet Baker, Carmen McRae.
Evelyn’s music is marked by the jazz harmony she studied at the Guildhall School of Music, but it is her lyrical poetic honesty which sets her apart. In her writing, she is inspired by poets, songwriters, and wider literature, taking inspiration from contemporary poets like Wendy Cope, who express complex feelings and questions with linguistic simplicity. Originally from the Lake District, Evelyn’s work heavily features natural imagery, using metaphor to explore her own interior world alongside larger existential questions. Evelyn writes all of her songs alone, but collaborates on arrangements with pianist and composer Lior Solomons-Wise, creating a beautiful range of textures and atmospheres live.
