Wendy has sung many different styles of music – ranging from large scale classical choral works, operetta and musicals to backing vocalist for a prog rock band! But with folk music she has found songs that come from the heart and allow great emotional expression and social commentary. Josienne Clarke and The Imaginary String Band at MondayMonday, The Green Note, Camden, London
"Josienne Clarke’s music largely languishes in folk chanson, but occasionally dips a toe into blues shoes. Josienne's musical awakening began at a young age, learning parts to sing along with her father as he played folk and ballad classics on his Spanish guitar. Growing up in a world of singing and playing, Josienne was always a musician, and her natural authenticity and easy communication on stage owes much to these early experiences of performance and interaction."

One of them, our very own IAN PALMER, is already here of course, and ROB McGHEE, PETE PURSLOW, STEVE LE TISSIER & DAVE JOLLY will be ready to walk the plank with him! Named after a pointless war with the Spanish over a severed ear, they met at sea in the days when press-ganging was still legal. And their songs are of the sea - well known and rousing shanties, songs from Cyril Tawney, newer ones like The Last Trawl, sad ones and a few originals. He broke onto the British folk scene in 2006 with his rootsy folk songs which, whilst contemporary, evoke the 60s folk revival when singer-songwriters original output blended with traditional material. The Mersea Session at The Coast Inn, West Mersea, Essex
If you are looking for the rockingest acoustic session in Essex, it's on at the Coast Inn, in West Mersea, 8 miles south of Colchester, every Thursday night. The acoustic of the venue is excellent, wooden floor, no soft furnishings and varied ceiling heights. The beer is excellent, currently Green King IPA, Mersea Island Brewery's Yo Boy! and Maldon Gold, Champion Beer of Britain 2007. But be warned, musician seats fill up fast, as do the remainder for listeners/drinkers, so it's wise to arrive about 8pm. And don't expect an early night - the music usually finishes about 11.30. Music style is widely varied, from Irish, Scottish, English and American tunes to bluegrass, jazz and rock, with songs from many genres. It is a completely inclusive session, with no cliques or rules, just respect for fellow singers and musicians.

John Smith at The Clocktower, Croydon, South London

Nicky Swann at The Jolly Sailor, 46 Northumberland Place, Teignmouth, Devon
"Nicky Swann is developing into a fine singer-songwriter. Her delivery is warm, soulful (sometimes gritty) but always spiritually tinged. She lists Patsy Cline, Carole King and Janis Joplin as her big three. A passionate performer, she uses elements of folk, blues and country to tell her tales of love, hope and death."

Coope, Boyes and Simpson at The Ram Folk Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey
"BARRY, JIM and LESTER present a radically different, modern face to English 'a cappella' singing, with ‘Trad’ songs reworked so they shine and strong, original songs with memorable tunes, soaring harmonies and sometimes radical words that strike a chord and make you listen. CBS sing it as they see it, be it the futility of war, industrial and rural decline or the glories of our traditions and history. Their new CD ‘As If’ has gained rave reviews and airplay, and as special guests on Radcliffe & Marconie’s Radio 2 show in June they opened the ears of an entirely new audience who hadn’t realised ‘Folk’ could be this good!"

Bill Sheffield & Dave Saunders at The Flying Club Cafe Bar, Rhoose, S.Wales
"Everything about Bill is authentic. It`s there in the intense, transcendent way he fingerpicks his guitar with hints of John Hurt and Blind Blake flashing through." Ably supported bt Dave Sunders of The Producers on acoustic bass."

Crooked Still at The Brudenell Social Club, Leeds, West Yorkshire
“Crooked Still continue to redefine the parameters of bluegrass and progressive folk with their unique take on the old-time music they love. The tunes on Some Strange Country are mostly traditional, but the band infuses them with a subtle bluegrass virtuosity, chamber music attitude, and solos that often sound like they were borrowed from classical music… Aoife O’Donovan’s voice is the focal point of the album, delivering the songs with the understated virtuosity typical of the best folksingers.” -All Music Guide

The Joyful Noise at The Stables, Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire

The Joyful Noise are old school but new. They're rootsy, with Americana, Gypsy swing, 1920s jazz, reggae, calypso, pop and plenty of joy (that’s obvious from the name). And when The Joyful Noise play, the audience will be bouncing up and down. They’re real, earthy, good folk with only one goal, to make a great vibe and spread it around, and that’s got to be good. Paul Heaton, Miles Hunt and Rob da Bank think so too. Rob’s just booked them for Bestival again - and they’ve only been together a year!

Megson at Theatre Severn, Shrewsbury, Shropshire

The duo Megson are fast becoming hot property on the British folk and roots scene, and their three albums On The Side, Smoke Of Home and Take Yourself A Wife have chronicled that blossoming creative talent. Since their genesis in 2004 they’ve played up and down the country at folk clubs and festivals, supporting bands such as Show of Hands and Seth Lakeman. Now their tour dates sell out and they’ve received nominations for Best Duo in the 2009 & 2010 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards.
"For my money Megson are amongst the most exciting trailblazers of British contemporary folk." Seth Lakeman
