You are Wolf and Firefly at MondayMonday, The Green Note, Camden, London
"You Are Wolf peddles experimental folk and originals through looped vocals, melodica, bass and whatever else she can lay her hands on. Elsewhere, as Kerry Andrew, she's a composer of experimental vocal music and choral music, as well a performer with adventurous a cappella trio, juice, punky jazz crew DOLLYman and folkjazz sextet Metamorphic. You Are Wolf explores mostly English folk songs and original material with gentle touches of electronica, weaves in spoken word and throws in an array of wild vocal techniques."
"firefly's alt-folk songs of love, death and the sea have been captivating audiences across London over the last year. With a unique line-up of piano, strings, guitar, Javanese gamelan and voices, their carefully crafted music is fuelled by the driving post-minimalism of John Adams, the wonky pop of Sufjan Stevens and the emotionally direct lyricism of Joni Mitchell. Their songs are rich with close vocal harmonies, infectious rhythms and delicate atmospheric textures. firefly are Bea Hankey (voice), John Barber (piano, gender), Sam Glazer (cello) James Redwood (violin) and Jack Ross (guitar)."

Martin Carthy at at The Tudor Folk Club, Chesham, Buckinghamshire
`Arguably the greatest English folk song performer, writer, collector and editor of them all' Q Magazine (2004)
For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it.
Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) is the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals' music documentary strand on BBC 2) - there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played.

Sam Carter at The Corn Exchange, Newbury, Berkshire
"A startlingly perceptive and self-assured young singer and guitarist from the English midlands, Sam Carter has spent the last few years busily honing his craft both as a writer and performer, studying guitar with Martin Simpson and touring with Bellowhead whilst holding down his post as Emerging Artist in Residence at London’s Southbank Centre.
Armed with a ‘killer voice’ (Nitin Sawhney) and the ability to play his guitar ‘like a harp’ (Time Out), as well as an unerring ability to put his personal experiences into a wider perspective, the east London-based songsmith made his mark with his debut album ‘Keepsakes’ released August 2009.Picking up from where the intricate guitar and ‘haunting’ (Eliza Carthy) storytelling of his EP ‘Here In The Ground’ (released April ’08 via Proper) left off, ‘Keepsakes’ is a collection of ten songs of rare depth and detail that belie their author’s tender years. That’s not to say that ‘Keepsakes’ doesn’t pack a punch; Sam kicks the album into life with ‘Yellow Sign’ spitting a fiery tale of east end violence over breakneck and impossibly intricate fingerstyle guitar work."
Jack McNeill & Charlie Heys at The Ram Folk Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey
"JACK and CHARLIE met while studying at the Birmingham Conservatoire and started playing together as a duo in 2007. During this time they were mentored by none other than Joe Broughton! 'BBC R2 Young Folk Award' finalists in 2008, their new album, 'The Northern Road', is out now, taking in a multitude of influences. 'Playing of the very highest standard, delivered with commitment and passion - gloriously upbeat and beautifully atmospheric', says 'Rock 'n' Reel' mag. "

The acoustic of the venue is excellent, wooden floor, no soft furnishings and varied ceiling heights. The beer is excellent, currently Green King IPA, Mersea Island Brewery's Yo Boy! and Maldon Gold, Champion Beer of Britain 2007. They take mainly traditional ballads then coil them and twist them, making them stranger and darker; they don’t so much make folk rock as make the old stories quiver and pulse with new electricity."

Allan Taylor at The Ram Folk Club, Thames Ditton, Surrey
"ALLAN is the consummate performer, a writer of literary gracefulness who chronicles the realism of otherwise unsung heroes and uncharted lives. His songs are written from a lifetime of travelling; always the observer passing through, each song is a vignette of life. Like a story told over a drink in a bar, the characters come to life like people you know and places become as familiar as if you had been there. His songs have been recorded by more than a hundred other performers of various nationalities (there are more than sixty cover versions of his song 'It's Good to See You', in ten different languages), and every concert by him is an experience to remember. His new and 20th album ‘Leaving at Dawn’ is quintessential AT, instantly recognisable with a warm, inviting sound and a return to the more folk-inflected style that characterised his earlier years."
Robert Brown at The Queens Head, Bramfield, Halesworth, Suffolk
Robert Brown came highly recommended for his first visit to us in April and we fully endorse that recommendation after a stunning performance at the Queen's Head in April.
With his unique style and presence Robert delivers a wealth of styles and emotions throughout the roots spectrum.
His psychedelic folk-come-blues-come-jazz performances are unique yet accessible, eccentric yet consistent

“Gorgeous”. Tom Robinson, BBC 6 Music
Chris Wood at The Lantern Theatre, Sheffield
"Chris Wood has emerged over the last decade as perhaps the most significant voice in contemporary folk music in the UK. After first coming to attention as bass player with The Oyster Band, he went on to noted collaborations with Martin Carthy, Andy Cutting and his own English Acoustic Collective before watershed release "The Lark Descending" in 2006. From that point, through a trio of much feted albums including this year's "Handmade Life" he has continued to, in ever increasing focus, eye the world around him with passion and society's machinations with distrust, frustration and at times contempt. There is a brooding anger and distrust to his take on economic collapse (The Grand Correction); shock and horror in his relentless unwinding of the story of the killing of Jean Charles de Menezes (Hollow Point); and a trademark embrace and love of Englishness in his pinpoint accurate attack on the BNP (Spitfires). His performances, electric with a sense of emotions barely contained, are a tour de force of storytelling, musicianship and timing that create a sense of space not unlike the Kent estuary skies he often casts an eye to."
The Chloe Hall Trio at Rose Theatre at Edge Hill University, Ormskirk, Lancashire
"Direct from Australia, Chloe Hall's never-ending world tour finally hits the UK
with the release of her groundbreaking new album, Outside. Chloe is an engaging,
intriguing and charismatic performer, but it's the simple, undeniable quality of
her songs that leave the listener with such an overwhelming emotion. Making up
the Chloe Hall Trio are two of Australia's finest musicians, bassist Chris
Mildren, and percussionist Teal Bain-Roben."

Marie Little at The Bridge Folk Club, Newcastle Upon Tyne
"Most singers feel it important to include a high measure of 'topical' songs that show some social conscience. This has always been the case with singers like Marie, and yet it is obvious to her that entertainment is the name of the game. Hence her repertoire of songs veers through cotton songs, mining songs, music hall, country and pop songs, and judging by her popularity it is a winning combination, yet she manages to stamp her style on each song with ease" Jez Lowe
