Wendy Arrowsmith & Blind Summat supported by Len Hand and Lazymanz Flute at The Woodlark Folk Club, The Woodlark Inn, Church Street, Lambley, Nottingham
"Good Time (mainly!) Folk & Blues from North Yorkshire. Three talented musicians/ songwriters and a banjo player came together with a mission to cheer up the Folk Scene. The Result is...... Blind Summat! The Talented Musicians are: Wendy Arrowsmith. Wendy is establishing a name for herself on the Northeast Folk scene as a fine singer of traditional songs (Scottish, Irish, English & American) and as writer of folky style songs with a real sense of place and history. She says she mainly joined Blind Summat to laugh at the banjo player! Joolz Cavell is also well known on the North Yorkshire Folk Scene as a writer of fine contemporary folk songs, a talented percussionist and for her solid guitar style. She says she joined Blind Summat to pass the time between real gigs. Rebekah Findlay is another fine singer & musician and burgeoning songwriter. She says she joined Blind Summat to keep the old folks happy (i.e. the rest of the band). Paul Arrowsmith is the banjo player. He joined Blind Summat as it was the only gig he could get. Unaccompanied & folky!"

"The simple yet moving music centres around the miraculous blending of two very different voices: that of Welsh songstress Emily Williams, who also sails through the mix with her violin and sets up chunky rhythms with her nylon-strung guitar, and that of Rebecca Sullivan of Utah who fingerpicks a sparkling steel-string, and breaks out the harmonica for a song or two. You could call it contemporary folk – with an edge – and the group has been compared to Indigo Girls, The Be Good Tanyas, Simon and Garfunkel, Tracy Chapman, Michelle Shocked, Rickie Lee Jones and Dead Can Dance."

Edwina Hayes at The Spring Bank Tavern, 29 Spring Bank, Hull, East Yorkshire

With a vast repertoire of traditional & original songs, dance tunes & dances playing bouzouki, melodeon, dulcimer, banjo & step percussion, he's been a professional musician since 1971. Pete looks to the tradition, but doesn't shrink from adapting and reinventing in order to move forward. He is essentially a storyteller, equally at home with lengthy traditional ballads as with pithy self-penned songs. He has recorded ten albums, broadcasts regularly on local and BBC radio and has appeared in several television programmes. Journalist Colin Irwin wrote in Mojo Magazine, "He explores the heartland of the English folk song revival with an ease and honesty that invests traditional songs with a simplistic beauty"

"A formidable acoustic duo. The strength of their material suggests they have written songs that may well be with us for a long time to come” - Mike Wilson, Folking.Com

Their repertoire encompasses folk, traditional, Celtic, swing, blues and classical music richly illustrated by a diverse range of instruments from mandolin, guitar, banjo’s, ukuleles, double bass and Hilary’s famous giant mandobass - the latter generates a lot of interest at performances"

The Wilders at The Luminaire, Kilburn, London
"The Wilders have a deep and compelling, foottapping sense of rhythm that lays the foundation, whether it's the oldtime "Jenny On The Road," the harddriving "When The Levee's Gone," or the honkytonkin' spiritual "Belshazzar." You can easily imagine pretty much any of the early Opry acts doing "The Blues Come Around" or a ballad like "Together Apart." Come to think of it, maybe that's the best label for them-a oneband oldtime Opry show." Bluegrass Unlimited

Martin Carthy at Mrs Yarringtons Music Club, Battle, East Sussex
"For more than 40 years Martin Carthy has been one of folk music's greatest innovators, one of its best loved, most enthusiastic and, at times, most quietly controversial of figures. His skill, stage presence and natural charm have won him many admirers, not only from within the folk scene, but also far beyond it. Trailblazing musical partnerships with, amongst others, Steeleye Span, Dave Swarbrick and his award-winning wife (Norma Waterson) and daughter Eliza Carthy have resulted in more than 40 albums, but Martin has only recorded 10 solo albums, of which the much anticipated Waiting for Angels (Topic TSCD527) is the latest. Whether in the folk clubs (which he continues to champion), on the concert stage or making TV appearances (he was the subject of the acclaimed `Originals' music documentary strand on BBC 2) - there are few roles that Martin Carthy hasn't played. He's a ballad singer, a ground-breaking acoustic & electric guitarist and an authoritative interpreter of newly composed material. He always prefers to follow an insatiable musical curiosity rather than cash in on his unrivalled position. Perhaps, most significant of all, are his settings of traditional songs with guitar, which have influenced a generation of artists, including Bob Dylan and Paul Simon, on both sides of the Atlantic."

Listen and you shall hear - The Life and Work of Lucy Broadwood at Folk at The Royal Oak, Lewes, Sussex
"As told, sung and played by Irene Shettle and Ralph Jordan."

Cara Dillon at Bush Hall, Shepherds Bush, London
"Cara has an incredibly rare talent that you only come across a handful of times in your whole life. Her gentle charm and natural personality combine with a mesmerizing gift to relate a great story through song and has helped her to defy borders, cultures and even languages. She is an emotive and captivating performer at the very top of her field and one has the feeling she'll be there for a very long time."

Kiss The Mistress at The Redbourn Folk Club, Redbourn, Hertfordshire
"Kiss the Mistress is a trio whose dynamic and exciting sound is rooted in Gaelic tradition. The unique combination of 'cello/voice (Ginny Davis) and chromatic button accordion (John Ramirez) underpinned by the driving rhythmical counterpoint of bodhran (Roy Jones) creates a sound that is both unique and engaging. Always searching for ancient resonances, they give voice to the tunes and songs that draw them. With skillfully crafted arrangements they celebrate the breadth of pan European music and perform their own self penned material."

The Mandolinquents at New Greenham Arts Centre, Newbury, Berkshire
The Mandolinquents feature everything from hot swing and ragtime instrumentals from the mandolin orchestras of the 1930s: Irving Berlin, Mozart, Ravel and Tchaikovsky to lively reels and beautiful traditional Irish airs to Chinese and Brazilian folk tunes. All this played with infectious fun, off-beat humour and stunning virtuosity on mandolin, mandola, mandocello, mandobass and classical guitar, with the occasional burst of song or fiddle.

Bella Hardy (with Chris Sherburn) at The Norwegian Church Arts Centre, Cardiff
"Bella's solo performances combine her mesmerising voice with intricate fiddle accompaniment to breath-taking effect."

Crucible at The Black Swan Folk Club, York
"A dynamic English folk ensemble from Sheffield, Crucible marry driving and infectious instrumental music with richly layered harmony song and subtle accompaniments. Their music combines the deepest roots of their native tradition with a fresh and contemporary edge to produce performances sparking with raw energy."

Bag of Rats at The Royal George, 11 High Street, West Coker, Nr Yeovil, Somerset
"Spreading disease from the Somerset and Dorset area of the West Country comes a filthy scum slime of rats, in fact the Bag of Rats. The band have toured around the local area (to the dismay of all) gigging at festivals, pubs and folk clubs entertaining the crowds (is five people a crowd?) with their unique take on folk with influences in Traditional English Beer, Nuclear Physics (where's me bloody fusion? - you can't have nuclear physics without fusion), Blues, Irish, Jazz, Country, a smidgen of Ska (Naah), a hint of alternative (Alt what?) and a peppering of salt and psychedelic skiffle."

Bellowhead at Theatr Mwldan, Cardigan, Ceredigion
“Wild, joyous, perverse, bold, crazed, full-blooded, intricate, fearless, funny, epic and mostly BIG… Bellowhead don’t disappoint. Prepare to be amazed." fRoots
The rousing, sharp-suited Bellowhead were first unleashed onto an unsuspecting audience at the Oxford Festival in April 2004, brought together by the award-winning duo Spiers and Boden. Their plan was to gather a talented collective of disparate musicians into a group capable of playing many styles, idioms and textures from around the world from big band through soul, jazz and funk, to classical strings - yet retaining, at its heart, an exquisite sensitivity to the essence of English traditional music.
With a variety of more eccentric influences including brass, strings, disco music, sea shanties and Tom Waits, Bellowhead take “outrageous but enthralling liberties with some of folk’s hardy veterans, turning Rigs of the Time into a knockabout show tune…and Death and the Lady into a Victorian melodrama” Mojo.

Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer at The Baccapipes Folk Club, Keighley, West Yorkshire
"Currently taking the world by storm, Vicki and Jonny are rightly “establishing themselves as one of the best young duos around on the folk scene today” (Famous Willows Folk Club). Although best-known for their instrumental skills with Scottish Smallpipes, accordion and even Swedish Nyckelharpa, the duo are well recognised for their songs arrangements too. With their blend of traditional material and contemporary interpretations, they have developed a sound that is both familiar and fresh."

Vin Garbutt at Carlisle Folk & Blues Club, The Sunset Suite, Brunton Park, Carlisle United Football Club, Carlisle, Cumbria
